VMware

VMware is an industry leader in virtualization technology. They offer a range of products spanning both Type 1 (bare-metal) and Type 2 (hosted) hypervisors.

Desktop Products (Type 2)​

  • VMware Workstation Pro / Player (Linux/Windows): Powerful desktop virtualization. Often considered faster and more stable than VirtualBox for 3D acceleration and heavy workloads, though Workstation Pro is paid software.
  • VMware Fusion (macOS): The equivalent of Workstation for Mac users.

Enterprise Products (Type 1)​

  • VMware vSphere / ESXi: A bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on server hardware without an underlying OS. This is the enterprise standard for data centers. It offers advanced features like vMotion (moving live VMs between physical servers with zero downtime) and High Availability.

VMware Tools​

Similar to VirtualBox Guest Additions, installing VMware Tools (or open-vm-tools on modern Linux distributions) inside the guest OS is crucial. It provides:

  • Better video performance.
  • Copy/paste between host and guest.
  • Time synchronization.
  • Proper graceful shutdown signals from the hypervisor.

When to use VMware?​

For desktop users, VirtualBox is usually sufficient and free. However, if you require enterprise-grade stability, advanced networking, or if you are preparing for a career in IT infrastructure, familiarizing yourself with VMware products is highly recommended.
